Fashion in Forward Motion

Ashliegh Genece
Fashion Merchandising, Marketing Minor, B.S. to M.S. in Digital Transformation and Innovation

“My major and minor courses actually provide me with the skills I need to excel in the fashion industry.”

A fashion merchandising major and marketing minor, Ashliegh has gained a wide scope of takeaways tailored to her future career: from retail math and business writing to presentation skills and industry knowledge. “I aspire to use marketing strategy, advertising, and social media management to meet consumer demands in fashion,” Ashliegh says. “Learning about those things is helping me reach my ultimate career goal.”

That goal? To become a marketing manager for a notable fashion brand.

At Stevenson, Ashliegh has already started climbing that ladder. “I had the opportunity to intern for Hanesbrands Inc. as a Merchandising and Product Marketing Intern for the Champion Kids brand,” she remarks. “This role allowed me to apply all that I have been learning in coursework at Stevenson to an actual position in the fashion industry.”

During her internship, Ashliegh was able to attend a variety of meetings with the merchandising team, including merchandise calendar meetings, line development framework meetings, and vendor trend presentations. Much of her time was spent analyzing the kids’ activewear space on e-commerce and making recommendations for the Champion Kid’s Spring 2023 line to launch online. “Through this project, I learned how to do market research and learned a lot about digital marketing techniques,” Ashliegh notes.

Ashliegh’s interest in fashion extends onto Stevenson’s campus. She serves as the Vice President of the Fashion Apparel and Design Club (FAD), organizing, promoting and executing events for the campus community. This past semester, she helped set up the FAD Club Thrift Store, where students could donate clothing as well as shop the store free of cost.

In addition to her fashion merchandising and marketing classes, Ashliegh has taken advantage of Stevenson’s ǰ’s-ٴ-Ѳٱ’ program in Digital Transformation and Innovation. “The program allows me to learn about the current business and technology climate, which would help me excel in [my] future role.”
