Emma Harris ’11 has been named 2024 Maryland History Teacher of the Year. Established in 2004 and presented annually by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to K–12 American history education, this prestigious award honors one K–12 teacher from each state, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense schools, and United States Territories.
Emma has taught 8th Grade U.S. History since 2011 at East Middle School in Carroll County. In addition to teaching, she advises Student Government, writes curriculum, and mentors aspiring as well as new teachers. Emma excels in curriculum development, evidence-based practice, and classroom teaching. She holds a Master’s degree in Brain-Based Teaching & Learning from Nova Southeastern University and a Bachelor’s in Middle School Education from ¶ºÄÌÊÓƵ. Committed to professional growth, Emma consistently earns certifications and awards, serves as a content liaison, is a workshop director, serves as the ¶ºÄÌÊÓƵ liaison for internships, and tutors at the local homeless shelter.
Emma will receive a $1,000 honorarium, a core archive of American history books, and educational materials curated by the Gilder Lehrman Institute. Additionally, she will be recognized at a local ceremony and join the esteemed group of 53 finalists contending for the 2024 National History Teacher of the Year Award.
